Unpacking musculoskeletal pain
MARCH 16, 2026
Musculoskeletal pain is one of the most common reasons people seek healthcare. It affects the muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissues that allow the body to move efficiently. Whether it shows up as back pain, neck stiffness, shoulder discomfort, knee pain, or recurring headaches, the underlying issue is often the same: the body is not moving the way it was designed to move.
At our practice, we specialize in physical rehabilitation which focuses on identifying and correcting the mechanical causes of pain rather than simply masking symptoms.
So…what causes musculoskeletal pain?
Most musculoskeletal pain develops gradually rather than from a single injury. Common contributors include:
• Poor movement patterns
• Joint stiffness and loss of mobility
• Muscle weakness or imbalance
• Repetitive stress from work or training
• Previous injuries that never fully rehabilitated
• Prolonged sitting and postural strain
Over time, these issues change how forces move through the body. When one joint loses motion, another often compensates. Eventually tissues become irritated and painful.
Pain is often the signal of dysfunction
One of the most important things to understand about musculoskeletal pain is that the location of the pain is not always the location of the problem. For example:
• Knee pain may originate from poor hip control.
• Neck pain may be related to upper back stiffness.
• Shoulder pain may come from scapular instability.
• Low back pain may be linked to limited hip mobility.
That’s why a comprehensive biomechanical evaluation is critical. Instead of only focusing on the painful area, we evaluate how the entire kinetic chain is functioning.
Why passive treatment alone is not enough
Traditional approaches to musculoskeletal pain often rely heavily on passive treatments such as medication, rest, or occasional adjustments. While these can help reduce symptoms, they do not always correct the underlying mechanical issue.
Long-term improvement requires restoring proper movement patterns.
This is where physical rehabilitation becomes essential.
Rehabilitation focuses on three key goals:
1. Restore Mobility: Restricted joints and tight tissues limit normal movement. If clinically indicated targeted manual therapy and mobility exercises help restore motion.
2. Improve Stability: Once mobility is restored, the body needs the strength and neuromuscular control to maintain it. Specific exercises retrain stabilizing muscles.
3. Reinforce Efficient Movement: The final step is integrating these improvements into everyday movement, work activities, and athletic performance.
This approach not only helps resolve current pain but also reduces the likelihood of recurrence.
Movement is medicine—here’s why
One of the biggest misconceptions about musculoskeletal pain is that the solution is rest. In reality, appropriate movement is often the most effective treatment. The key is applying the right movement at the right time, progressing from gentle mobility work to strength and functional training.
Patients are often surprised how quickly symptoms improve once normal biomechanics are restored.
Our approach to recovery
Our goal is not simply to get you out of pain — it is to restore function, improve resilience, and help you move better than before the injury occurred.
By combining advanced physical rehabilitation strategies, and manipulation when indicated we address both the structural and functional aspects of musculoskeletal health.
If you are dealing with persistent pain, recurring injuries, or limitations in movement, a comprehensive biomechanical approach may be the missing piece.
Move better. Heal fully. Stay active.
